Roman | Aureus | Mar. Aurelius | CH-XF-5X2 FS

This impressive gold aureus was issued under Marcus Aurelius, who is remembered as the philosopher-emperor, co-ruler with Lucius Verus, and later sole emperor of Rome. His reign was marked by intellectual achievement and prolonged military campaigns on Rome’s frontiers.

The obverse features a refined portrait of Marcus Aurelius, engraved in fine style with striking realism that reflects the artistry of the Antonine period. On the reverse, Fides—the divine embodiment of loyalty and trust—appears to hold a victory standard. This imagery emphasized the steadfastness of Rome’s armies and the stability of imperial rule during times of war.

Graded by NGC as Choice Extremely Fine, this aureus is particularly well-struck with a perfect Strike 5/5, complemented by its highly detailed engraving. Despite surface marks noted as 2/5, the coin stands out for its strong portrait and well-preserved reverse symbolism.

A distinguished piece of Roman gold, it captures both the philosophy and military resilience of Marcus Aurelius’ reign.
