Roman Aureus Claudius Ch-F-5X3

This gold aureus was struck during the reign of Claudius, the fourth emperor of Rome. Rising to power unexpectedly after the assassination of Caligula, Claudius overcame doubts about his suitability to rule and proved to be an effective and pragmatic leader. His reign is remembered for ambitious infrastructure projects, judicial reforms, and Rome’s expansion into Britain.
The obverse features a laureate portrait of Claudius, highlighting his distinctive profile as captured by imperial engravers. On the reverse, an oak wreath encircles the inscription SPQR PP OB C S, which translates to “The Senate and People of Rome, Father of the Fatherland, for saving the citizens.” This rare distinction reflected Claudius’ acceptance as both protector and restorer of stability within the empire.
Graded by NGC as Choice Fine, with an exceptional Strike 5/5 and Surface 3/5, this aureus remains a remarkable artifact of Roman history. Collectors prize such coins not only for their gold content but also for their direct link to one of Rome’s most consequential emperors.
