Roman Empire | Tiberius | Silver Denarius | MS-4x2

This silver denarius was struck under the reign of Emperor Tiberius, Rome’s second emperor and successor to Augustus. Issued between AD 14 and 37 at the Lugdunum Mint, it is one of the most famous Roman silver coins, popularly known as the “Tribute Penny” referenced in the Bible.

The obverse features a finely detailed laureate portrait of Tiberius, representing his authority as emperor. The reverse depicts Livia, Tiberius’ mother, as Pax, the goddess of peace, seated and holding a scepter and olive branch. This design symbolized stability and prosperity under his rule.

Certified by NGC in Mint State, with a sharp Strike 4/5 and Surface 2/5, this coin maintains strong detail and impressive eye appeal despite some surface challenges.

Denarii of Tiberius are among the most historically significant Roman coins, bridging the early imperial era and the foundations laid by Augustus. Their connection to both imperial propaganda and biblical history makes them highly sought after by collectors.

A timeless classic of Roman coinage and an essential addition to any serious ancient collection.
