1/2-oz Gold American Eagle NGC MS-70 (Random Year)

1/2-oz Gold American Eagle NGC MS-70 Obverse in Holder

Half-ounce Gold American Eagles put a serious amount of 22-karat gold into a coin small enough to tuck in a shirt pocket, and they carry the full weight of the United States behind them. These are the official gold bullion coins of the U.S., struck by the U.S. Mint since 1986, and each holds a half troy ounce of .9167 fine gold with legal-tender status and a $25 face value. The coins offered here have been submitted to NGC and certified MS-70, the top of the Mint State scale, meaning no post-production flaws are visible under 5x magnification. Dates vary with inventory.

The obverse carries Augustus Saint-Gaudens' Liberty, adapted from his 1907 double eagle, striding forward with a torch raised in one hand and an olive branch in the other while the sun's rays spread behind her. The reverse of issues struck from 1986 through mid-2021 shows Miley Busiek's family of eagles, a male eagle returning to the nest with an olive branch as the female shelters the eaglets below; issues from late 2021 forward carry Jennie Norris' close portrait of an eagle in profile. Both reverses are surrounded by the statutory inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the 1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD, 25 DOLLARS weight and denomination legend.

American Gold Eagles remain the most widely traded gold coin in the country, and the 22-karat alloy of gold with copper and silver makes them noticeably more resistant to handling marks than pure gold issues, which is part of why so many survive at the MS-70 level. A perfect grade from NGC adds a layer of third-party verification on weight, purity, and condition that buyers and dealers alike recognize on sight. If you want fractional gold that trades easily and comes with independent certification already done, certified half-ounce Eagles are a straightforward way to do it. The half-ounce size also gives you flexibility to sell in smaller increments later rather than parting with a full ounce at a time.
