1-oz Proof American Gold Eagle (Random Year)

Each year the US Mint issues Gold American Eagles in two distinct versions, bullion and proof. Both versions have the same designs, but several key difference. Bullion coins have the basic, even finish of higher-production coins, primarily trade upon their gold weight, and are delivered in basic packaging.

In contrast, Proof Gold American Eagles have a gorgeous, two-tone finish with matte designed features against a reflective background, have much lower mintage figures, come in special display boxes made by the US Mint that include a certificate of authenticity,. Of course, these special features also mean that they cost more than their bullion counterparts.

We watch for opportunistic phases in the gold market and recommend Proof Gold Eagles when they can be acquired for a reasonable premium over bullion Eagles. At such low prices, they're an excellent opportunity and, eventually, many of our clients take advantage of a second opportunity by trading the Proofs back in for bullion coins when proof premiums run to the high end of their trading range.
