1163-1201 Crusader Denier Antioch Bohemond III Silver NGC AU-50
This medieval silver denier was issued by Bohemond III, Prince of Antioch, during his reign from 1163 to 1201 during the height of the Crusader States period. Antioch was one of the four major Crusader principalities established after the First Crusade, serving as a crucial Christian stronghold in the Holy Land for nearly two centuries.
The obverse displays a helmeted bust of Bohemond III facing left, surrounded by a Latin legend within a decorative border of crescents and stars. The reverse features the distinctive Cross of Antioch with pellets in each quarter, enclosed by a similar ornamental border and Latin inscription, reflecting the Christian symbolism central to Crusader coinage.
Graded AU-50 by NGC, this denier exhibits well-preserved detail with clear definition of the portrait and cross motifs despite light circulation wear. The silver surfaces retain attractive original patina with good eye appeal for the grade. Medieval Crusader coins remain highly sought after by collectors for their historical significance and connection to this pivotal period in European and Middle Eastern history.
