Gold from the age of Castilian chivalry rarely survives this well preserved. This dobla de la banda was struck at Seville under John II of Castile, who reigned from 1406 to 1454. The type takes its name from the diagonal band, or banda, that appears on the royal shield. It circulated during a long and turbulent reign marked by noble factions, court intrigue, and the ongoing struggle with Granada.

The obverse presents the quartered arms of Castile and Leon, with castles and rampant lions set within a beaded inner circle. An S at the top of the cross identifies the Seville mint, and the surrounding Gothic legend names John as king by the grace of God. The reverse shows a shield bearing the sash-like band, framed by a second Gothic legend and floral stops. Both sides show bold device definition and strong relief for a hand-hammered medieval issue.

NGC has graded this dobla MS-62, a notable level of preservation for gold of this era. The surfaces retain warm yellow color and soft mint luster, with the usual minor striking irregularities of hammered coinage. Medieval Spanish gold is scarce in mint state, and the Seville S variety adds an appealing point of attribution for specialists.
