Struck at the historic Seville Mint during the reign of King Philip II of Spain, this 4 Escudo gold coin is a shining artifact from the height of Spain’s global power. Certified About Uncirculated-53 by PCGS, it reflects outstanding detail for a hand-struck gold coin that’s over four centuries old. Out of the 71 examples certified, this lies firmly in the top 10 in terms of quality.
The obverse features the iconic crowned Spanish shield, representing the unification of Spain’s major kingdoms under one royal banner. Each section of the shield reflects Spain's vast territorial claims and dynastic power during the 16th century.
The reverse bears the striking Jerusalem cross, a powerful emblem of Spain’s Catholic identity and imperial mission. Surrounded by a quatrefoil border, it’s a hallmark of Spanish gold coins from this period.
This piece was minted using traditional hand-hammered techniques in 22-karat gold, and the mintmark "S D" identifies Seville as its origin, with the assayer’s initial "D" adding further traceability. Every such coin carries its own distinct characteristics—no two are exactly alike.
