1687 Germany 24 Mariengroschen NGC AU-55

This 1687 24 Mariengroschen (2/3rds of a Silver Thaler) from Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel is a striking example of the famed Wildman coinage, a series deeply rooted in German numismatic tradition. Issued under Duke Rudolph Augustus, this coin is an impressive representation of the artistic and symbolic motifs of the era.

Obverse:

The obverse features the Wildman, a legendary figure symbolizing strength and protection. In this depiction, he is shown gripping the branches of a pine tree, a unique variation among Wildman coin designs. The denomination "24" is placed on the left side, and a surrounding Latin inscription encircles the central image, denoting the coin’s issuing authority.

Reverse:

The reverse of this issue differs from other Wildman types, presenting a large "24" at the center. Beneath it, the inscription "MARIEN GROSCH V: FEINSILB:" confirms the denomination and fine silver content. Three decorative asterisk-like symbols (* )** further embellish the design, adding to the coin’s distinctive character.

Condition & Collectibility:

Graded About Uncirculated 55 by NGC, this coin retains exceptional detail with minimal circulation wear. The Wildman series is highly sought after among collectors of German state coinage, and this particular variety, with its unique design elements, makes it an even more desirable acquisition. Amazingly, this is the finest known of just two certified examples.  Clearly, we feel this is a great coin for the money, not to mention well over 300 years old.
