Gold cobs from the Nuevo Reino mint rank among the most coveted relics of Spain's colonial empire, and this 4 Escudo is a solid representative of the series. It was hand-struck at Santa Fe de Bogota, in what is now Colombia, between 1747 and 1756. The assayer initials FS appear beside the shield, tying the coin to the reign of Ferdinand VI. Gold from the mines of New Granada was coined here before shipment across the Atlantic, and surviving pieces remain closely studied by collectors of Spanish colonial gold.

The obverse shows the crowned Spanish shield of arms with the castles and lions of Castile and Leon. The denomination 4 and the assayer mark stand out clearly at the right side of the flan. The reverse carries the Jerusalem cross set within a lobed tressure, with rosettes filling the angles and portions of the legend visible around the rim. As with all cob coinage, the flan is irregular and the strike is uneven, yet the central devices show sharp relief and strong device definition.

NGC has graded this cob 4 Escudo AU-53, with only light high-point wear and rich, warm gold surfaces. The fields retain honest texture from the hand-striking process, and the color is even across both sides. Cob gold in About Uncirculated condition is genuinely scarce, since most examples circulated hard or were lost at sea, and that scarcity keeps demand steady. For those seeking a well-detailed example of Bogota mint colonial gold, this coin delivers. The coin pictured is the exact coin you will receive.
