This 1786 Taler was issued under Franz Ludwig von Erthal, Prince-Bishop of Würzburg, during a period when ecclesiastical territories in the Holy Roman Empire exercised sovereign monetary authority. Struck at the Würzburg mint, this silver Taler represents the economic and political power of the Catholic church-states in late 18th-century Bavaria. The Würzburg series is collected for both its historical significance and artistic merit, and this example is certified NGC MS63 with the DAV-2907 attribution.
The obverse displays a finely detailed right-facing bust of Franz Ludwig in ceremonial dress, wearing elaborate period attire complete with order insignia and a powdered wig. The legend reads "FRANZ LUDWIG. HERR. BEI WRC. S. R. I. PRINCEPS." with exceptional sharpness and clear, well-struck denticles. The reverse features a baroque allegorical design with a winged cherub crowning a coat of arms, standing beside maritime implements including a ship and anchor, symbolizing prosperity and divine favor. The inscription "MUERCESSS LABORUM" (The Reward of Labor) appears above, with "86" and "XEINE FEINE TBCRG" denoting date, purity, and mint.
Graded NGC MS63, this Taler exhibits even medium-gray surfaces with attractive light golden-blue toning, particularly on the reverse. The strike is bold throughout, with full detail visible on the portrait and allegory. Luster remains strong in protected areas, and the coin shows minimal handling marks consistent with the assigned grade. This is the sole finest example graded by NGC—only four specimens total have been certified, making this piece the undisputed condition census leader for the type. The coin pictured is the exact coin you will receive.
