1787 Lima, Peru 8 Escudo PCGS AU-55

This 1787 Lima 8 Escudo represents a historic Spanish colonial gold issue from the height of the empire's South American mining operations. Struck at the Lima mint during the reign of Charles III, this substantial gold coin was part of the vast treasure fleet system that connected Peru's rich mining regions to global commerce through Spain's colonial network.
The obverse features the armored bust of Charles III facing right, with the legend CAROLUS III DEI GRATIA surrounding the portrait. The reverse displays the elaborate Spanish coat of arms with the Pillars of Hercules, crowned and draped with the royal mantle, encircled by HISPANIARVM ET INDIARVM REX with the mint mark L and assayer's initial MI flanking the shield.
Certified by PCGS as AU-55, this exceptional example shows strong detail throughout with attractive golden surfaces and minimal wear on the high points. As a tied-for-finest-known example, this coin represents the pinnacle of preservation for this challenging colonial issue. The coin pictured is the exact coin you will receive.
