1845 $2.5 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle – NGC MS62
The 1845 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is a classic representative of pre–Civil War U.S. gold coinage—struck in an era when gold pieces were seldom seen in circulation outside the nation’s major financial centers. Issued from the Philadelphia Mint, this elegant $2.50 gold coin was produced at a time when hard money remained the bedrock of American commerce and trust in the fledgling banking system.
Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty Head design features a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, framed by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The reverse depicts a proud heraldic eagle grasping arrows and an olive branch, emblematic of both military strength and peace, with the denomination 2½ D. below. Gobrecht’s neoclassical artistry captured the young republic’s balance of dignity and restraint, setting a standard that would define U.S. gold coinage for decades.
This example, certified MS62 by NGC, exhibits full mint luster with attractive yellow-gold color and frosty surfaces. The strike is sharp and well-centered, showing crisp detail in Liberty’s hair and the eagle’s feathers. Minimal marks are present, consistent with the assigned grade, and the coin’s overall eye appeal is excellent for this scarce early issue. From a modest original mintage of just 112,602 pieces, few survive today in true Mint State condition, as most were either melted or circulated extensively during the economic volatility of the mid-19th century.
A beautiful survivor from the early years of Liberty Head gold, this 1845 Quarter Eagle offers collectors the charm of early U.S. Mint craftsmanship, the allure of scarce pre–Civil War gold, and the assurance of NGC certification. A coin of both historical depth and aesthetic grace, ideal for the discerning numismatist or type collector.
