This 1869 Mexico Four Escudo represents a significant piece from the Mexican Republic era, struck at the Mexico City mint during a period of political reconstruction following Emperor Maximilian's execution. The CH assayer mark indicates this coin was produced under the supervision of Carlos Herrera, one of the notable mint officials of the period. This denomination was part of Mexico's gold coinage system that provided stability during the turbulent late 1860s.

The obverse displays the iconic Mexican national emblem featuring an eagle perched on a cactus with a serpent in its beak, surrounded by the legend "REPUBLICA MEXICANA." The reverse showcases the radiant cap of liberty above an open book representing the constitution, with clasped hands symbolizing unity below. The design elements are well-struck with clear definition throughout, displaying attractive golden surfaces with subtle mint luster.

This particular example exhibits exceptional quality for this often-circulated issue, showcasing a solid strike and remarkably clean fields that are uncommon for Mexican gold of this period. The surfaces demonstrate the careful preservation that has maintained this coin's uncirculated status through more than 150 years. With over $2,000 worth of gold content at current precious metals values, this coin offers substantial intrinsic value beyond its numismatic importance.

The rarity of this date and mint combination cannot be overstated. Current population data shows only eleven examples certified between PCGS and NGC combined, making this among the scarcer dates in the Mexican Four Escudo series. This coin represents one of only four examples graded Mint State 62, with a single MS-63 representing the finest known specimen. Such low population figures would command significantly higher premiums if found in comparable United States gold issues from the same era.

Graded MS-62 by NGC, this example exhibits uncirculated surfaces with minor contact marks consistent with the grade level. The coin displays pleasing golden toning with good eye appeal and strong device definition. Mexican gold from this era remains highly sought after by collectors specializing in Latin American numismatics, yet these coins often trade at substantial discounts compared to their US counterparts despite comparable or superior rarity.
