1879-O Morgan Silver Dollar NGC MS-65
The New Orleans Mint had only recently resumed silver dollar production when it struck this 1879-O Morgan Dollar, making it an early representative of one of America's most beloved series. Designed by George T. Morgan, the dollar was authorized under the Bland-Allison Act of 1878 and quickly became the workhorse silver coin of the American West and South. New Orleans issues from this era are widely collected and carry genuine historical weight as products of that city's storied mint.
The obverse presents Morgan's left-facing portrait of Liberty with her hair flowing in well-defined waves beneath a cotton blossom and wheat wreath coronet. The legend E PLURIBUS UNUM arcs above, and thirteen stars ring the field. The reverse features a bold heraldic eagle with wings spread, clutching arrows and an olive branch, framed by an open wreath and the inscription ONE DOLLAR at the bottom, with the small O mint mark just above it.
NGC has graded this coin MS-65, a Gem Mint State designation reflecting original mint luster, sharp device definition, and surfaces essentially free of significant marks. The coin shows bright, cartwheel luster across both sides with clean fields and strong strike throughout. The 1879-O in Gem condition is a desirable date for collectors building high-grade Morgan sets or type collections. For those seeking a problem-free, NGC-certified New Orleans Morgan in true Gem condition, this example is a strong choice. The coin pictured is the exact coin you will receive.
