1861-O Seated Liberty Half Dollar SS Republic Shipwreck Effect Confederate States Issue NGC
Recovered from the wreck of the SS Republic, this 1861-O Seated Liberty Half Dollar carries one of the most layered stories in American numismatics. Struck at the New Orleans Mint in the tumultuous opening year of the Civil War, it is designated by NGC as a Confederate States Issue. Coins minted at New Orleans in 1861 crossed a remarkable political divide: production began under the United States, continued briefly under Louisiana state authority, and then passed to the Confederacy before the year was out.
The obverse presents the familiar Seated Liberty figure, robed and resting against a shield inscribed LIBERTY, holding a pole with a liberty cap aloft. Thirteen stars arc around the border, and the date 1861 sits boldly below. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with spread wings, clutching an olive branch and arrows, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOL. forming the legend. The coin shows the characteristic surfaces associated with the Shipwreck Effect designation, reflecting its long rest on the ocean floor before recovery.
NGC designates this example with the Shipwreck Effect label and identifies it as a Confederate States Issue, die variety W-09. The surfaces bear the subdued texture expected of a shipwreck coin, and the overall detail remains pleasing and fully identifiable. This piece occupies a singular place in Civil War history, touching both the Union and Confederate monetary systems. For those drawn to shipwreck coins, Civil War-era material, or Southern mint issues, this half dollar is a compelling and historically resonant example. We have two examples available for this date - the W-09 variety pictured here, and a W-15 variety offered at the same price.
