This exceptional collection commemorates the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, one of the most significant cultural events in American history. Held to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas, the fair attracted over 27 million visitors and showcased groundbreaking innovations including the Ferris wheel, electric lighting, and exhibits from 46 nations. This collection pairs a certified NGC MS-62 Deep Prooflike aluminum 50mm medal with an original framed display containing authentic exposition tickets, including admission tickets for Chicago Day and Manhattan Day, along with souvenir tickets featuring prominent figures. The presentation captures the grandeur and optimism of the Gilded Age, when America announced its arrival as a global power.
The obverse of the medal features an allegorical figure of Columbus holding a map and dividers, surrounded by the inscription CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS and the dates BORN 1456 DIED 1506. The detailed engraving showcases period Renaissance costume and cartographic instruments within an ornamental border. The reverse displays an elaborate scene of Columbia seated with a child, representing the Old World teaching the New, set against a dramatic sunburst radiating over a detailed view of the exposition's grand architecture. The legend reads CHICAGOU.S.A. 1892-1893 SOUVENIR WORLD'S FAIR with the additional notation 1492-1892 IV CENTENNIAL below the architectural scene. Both sides exhibit sharp relief and the deep mirror-like fields characteristic of the Deep Prooflike designation.
Graded MS-62 DPL by NGC, this medal retains strong reflective surfaces with boldly struck devices across both the portrait and exposition scenes. The aluminum composition displays even gray-silver tone with minimal contact marks. The accompanying framed collection includes original World's Columbian Exposition tickets mounted on archival matting, featuring admission tickets, souvenir tickets with portraits of Columbus, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and allegorical figures including Liberty and an Native American chief. Of note, in the ensemble is also the rarely seen ENVELOPE that contained these tickets long ago. These ephemeral items survived in remarkable condition for over 130 years. This combination represents a museum-quality assemblage documenting America's first true world's fair and remains highly desirable among collectors of Americana, exposition memorabilia, and 19th-century numismatic material.
