Roughly 19,900 Double Eagles sat forgotten in a Wells Fargo bank vault in Nevada until a dealer bought the entire group in 1996. Every coin was a 1908 No Motto $20 Saint-Gaudens, and most had never circulated. This is one of those coins, and it carries the Wells Fargo Nevada pedigree on its NGC label. The 1908 No Motto was the first full production year of the type, struck at Philadelphia before IN GOD WE TRUST was added to the reverse later that same year. It is the last expression of Augustus Saint-Gaudens' original motto-free design, and the hoard gave collectors their best supply of high-grade survivors from the entire series.

The obverse shows Liberty striding forward from a sunburst, a torch raised in her right hand and an olive branch extended in her left. Saint-Gaudens modeled her in high relief, and the Capitol building sits at the lower left beneath her trailing gown. On this example the fingers, facial features, and the fine drapery lines are all sharply defined, with LIBERTY and the surrounding stars bold along the rim. The reverse carries a young eagle in flight above another radiant sun, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS arcing above and strong feather detail through the wings and tail. The design has long been admired, and it shows best on a coin preserved at this level.

NGC has graded this Double Eagle MS-68, a level reached by only a small fraction of the Wells Fargo Nevada coins. The surfaces are clean and satiny with warm orange-gold color, and full original luster rolls evenly across the open fields on both sides. The step from MS-67 to MS-68 is a large one in this series, and it moves a coin out of the merely high-grade category and into true condition rarity. NGC has certified no 1908 No Motto Double Eagles in MS-69, which makes MS-68 the finest grade presently represented at that service. PCGS has certified just 10 coins in MS-69, so the surviving population at the very top of the scale is remarkably small, and those few coins trade far above the MS-68 level.

Gem 1908 No Motto Double Eagles are a cornerstone of the Saint-Gaudens series, and the Wells Fargo pedigree adds a documented story that collectors have followed for decades.
