The 1908-D Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle marks a pivotal year in U.S. gold coinage, as it represents the first Denver Mint issue in the series and the introduction of the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" on the reverse. Following public and political pressure, the motto was added mid-year after being controversially omitted from the original 1907 design. This coin was struck at the height of America's industrial and economic expansion, and it remains a cornerstone issue for both type collectors and Saint-Gaudens specialists.
The obverse features Augustus Saint-Gaudens' iconic striding Liberty, her figure rendered in graceful relief as she holds a torch aloft and an olive branch extended. The sun's rays radiate behind her, while the Capitol building appears at her feet, with the date "1908" below. The reverse displays a bold, high-relief eagle in flight above the sun, framed by the restored motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" and surrounded by rays of light. The motto appears directly below the eagle, clearly visible in this well-preserved example. Both sides exhibit sharp detail, reflecting the Denver Mint's strong early production standards.
Graded PCGS MS-65, this coin displays attractive mint luster with warm golden-orange toning and smooth, mark-free surfaces typical of the grade. The strike is well-executed, with full definition on Liberty's drapery and the eagle's feathers. The 1908-D Motto Double Eagle is popular among collectors assembling date runs or pursuing high-grade type coins from the Saint-Gaudens series.
