1911-S $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold PCGS MS-66
Gem survivors of the 1911-S Double Eagle are genuinely difficult to locate, and this one reached PCGS MS-66. San Francisco struck 775,750 pieces that year, yet nearly all of them went straight into commerce or bank reserves, where bag handling left marks behind. Later melts and overseas shipments thinned the ranks further, so the few coins that escaped with clean surfaces now sit at the top of the date's condition census.
Augustus Saint-Gaudens placed Liberty striding forward with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other, the Capitol dome small at her feet and rays of sunrise fanning out behind her. Forty-six stars ring the border, matching the number of states in 1911, while the S mintmark sits above the date at the lower right. The reverse carries a young eagle in flight above the sun, with IN GOD WE TRUST below and the legends struck in bold relief.
PCGS graded this Saint-Gaudens MS-66, a level where contact marks must stay minimal across Liberty's open fields and the eagle's wing. Rich orange-gold color covers both sides, and the luster rolls smoothly from the centers to the rims with no breaks or rub. Strike definition is sharp on Liberty's hand, the torch flame, and the Capitol, which are the first areas to go soft on this issue. Few 1911-S Double Eagles reach this tier of preservation, and the eye appeal here matches the technical grade. A welcome addition to any advanced collection of pre-1933 United States gold.
