1956 Franklin Half Dollar Bugs Bunny FS-401 PCGS MS-66
A die clash left Franklin with what looks like a set of buck teeth, and collectors have chased that quirk ever since. The reverse eagle's wing struck into the obverse die near Franklin's mouth, creating the raised lines that earned the FS-401 variety its Bugs Bunny nickname. Only a small share of 1956 halves show the clash clearly, so attributed examples trade well above common date coins. This piece also carries the Franklins of Idaho pedigree on the PCGS label, a collection known for high-end Franklin material.
John R. Sinnock's obverse places Benjamin Franklin in profile facing right, with LIBERTY arcing above and IN GOD WE TRUST along the lower rim. The portrait shows sharp relief through the hair and shoulder drapery, while the clash marks sit just off Franklin's lips where the wing tip landed. On the reverse, the Liberty Bell dominates the field with its crack and yoke plainly defined, and the small eagle stands to the right to satisfy the legal requirement for an eagle on half dollars. E PLURIBUS UNUM appears at left, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOLLAR framing the design.
PCGS graded this half dollar MS-66, a level that places it near the top of the certified population for the variety. Warm gray and russet toning covers both sides, and the underlying luster still moves across the fields with no distracting marks in the open areas. Gem Franklins with original surfaces and a clearly attributed clash are far harder to locate than the raw mintage figure suggests, and the eye appeal here supports the grade. For those seeking a well-preserved example of the Bugs Bunny variety with a recognized pedigree, this coin delivers. The coin pictured is the exact coin you will receive.
