A perfect MS-70 is the ceiling for any American Silver Eagle, and this 2013 issue reached it at PCGS. The coin came out of the West Point Mint, so the holder carries the 2013-(W) designation along with the Struck at West Point notation. It also earned the First Strike label, reserved for coins delivered within the first 30 days of the series release. That combination of top grade, West Point attribution, and early release status puts it well above an ordinary bullion eagle.

The obverse carries Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty, striding toward a rising sun with her flag flowing behind her and an armful of oak and laurel branches. LIBERTY arcs across the top while IN GOD WE TRUST and the 2013 date fill the lower field. On the reverse, John Mercanti's heraldic eagle holds the shield of the Union with an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, and thirteen stars sit above in a triangle. Both sides show sharp relief and crisp legend definition typical of a well-struck West Point eagle.

PCGS graded this one MS-70, the highest grade the service awards, meaning no post-production flaws are visible under 5x magnification. The surfaces are bright and fully brilliant, with even satin luster across the fields and no distracting marks on Liberty's gown or the eagle's breast. Silver Eagles handle easily but mark easily too, so a flawless example with this much eye appeal is worth holding. A welcome addition to any set of modern American Silver Eagles.
