They actually depict a real American Indian chief. All other “Indian” portraits are actually Lady Liberty with different head dresses on. Both Coins carry the distinction of being one of only two coin designs in American History to use an incuse design. The design features no raised edge, and the main devices and legends are in sunken relief below the surface of the coin.
