561-546 BC Lydia King Croesus Gold Stater Prototype Issue NGC XF 5x3

This 2,600 year old gold stater represents the first example of the world's earliest forms of gold coinage in human history. Struck during the reign of King Croesus of Lydia between 561-546 BC. and often referred to as a Prototype example, it was the first design type of the series and is exceedingly rare in any condition. Coins with this level of eyes appeal are few and far between.
The Lydian kingdom, located in modern-day western Turkey, is credited with inventing coinage around 650 BC, and Croesus became legendary for his immense wealth. This prototype issue stater showcases the iconic confrontation between a lion and bull, symbolizing strength and virility.
The obverse displays a bold lion confronting a bull in remarkable detail for such an ancient coin. The naturalistic engraving style captures the power and movement of both animals, with the lion's mane and the bull's muscular form clearly defined. The reverse features a simple incuse square punch, typical of early Lydian coinage, demonstrating the primitive but effective minting techniques of the period.
NGC has graded this exceptional example as XF (Extremely Fine) with strong surface quality and strike ratings of 5/5. The gold surfaces exhibit attractive natural patina with well-preserved details throughout the design. This coin represents a cornerstone of ancient numismatics, highly sought after by collectors of early world coinage and monetary history. The coin pictured is the exact coin you will receive.
