This silver third-stater was struck during the reign of King Croesus of Lydia between 561 and 546 BC, representing one of the earliest standardized silver coinages in history. Croesus introduced the bimetallic monetary system that replaced the earlier electrum coinage, establishing separate gold and silver denominations that would influence currency systems for millennia. Certified by NGC Ancients, this example carries strong Strike and Surface grades of 5/5 and 3/5 respectively.
The obverse displays the iconic confronting foreparts of a lion and bull, a powerful symbol of Lydian royal authority. The lion's snarling maw and the bull's muscular form are rendered with bold definition, their heads meeting at the center in a design that conveys strength and sovereignty. The reverse features the characteristic bipartite incuse punch, deeply struck into the flan with clear separation between the two rectangular depressions.
Graded Extremely Fine by NGC Ancients, this third-stater exhibits attractive surfaces with an appealing cabinet tone that speaks to its antiquity. The strike quality is notably sharp for the type, with strong device definition on the obverse design elements. Croeseids remain highly sought after by collectors of archaic Greek coinage, representing a pivotal moment in monetary history when pure silver and gold currencies first emerged.
