Learn About the S.S. Central America Shipwreck

“Ship of Gold”

We mentioned above that the S.S. Central America took on a nickname. That nickname is the “Ship of Gold.” Under the command of Captain William Herndon, the S.S. Central America had apparently made similar voyages in the past, but on September 11, 1857, it encountered the biggest hurricane of the decade. Try as they might, the crew of the ship could not succeed against such a large storm and when all was said and done, over 400 people died. The ship--and its cargo of nearly ten tons of gold--sank to the ocean floor.

Coins Have Recently Been Uncovered

For many years, the S.S. Central America Shipwreck was lost to time. Exactly 133 years after it sank, however, the ship was found. On September 11, 1988, the wreck was located and just a year later, a portion of the gold was recovered.

Until recently, that was the end of the story. The good news is that there has been another expedition that utilized modern technology to get to the bottom of the ocean and gather more of this shipwreck gold. Speaking of which...
