The S.S. Central America shipwreck of 1857 was a monumental tragedy in terms of human loss. It also had long-lasting effects on the US economy as a result of massive amounts of gold and silver sinking to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. So much was lost that our country was thrust into a recession.
Most of the "treasure" recovered 150 years later was in the form of freshly minted gold Double Eagles from the San Francisco mint along with a trove of gold bars and ingots. Silver from any shipwreck found is often horribly damaged (both visually and technically) due to the ravaging effects of saltwater on the white metal.
We are pleased to offer the following silver coins salvaged from the shipwreck that are traced back to a singular passenger, Mr. Pascual Esquerra, a Chilean and Spanish businessman who lost his life that day. Each coin has been certified and pedigreed by NGC with a shipwreck effect grade along with a special label and a pedigree to Esquerra.
There are two types of coins that were recovered in surprisingly remarkable condition. Each coin has been hand-selected for quality and eye appeal. While our supplies last, we are offering the larger-sized Chilean Pesos for $539 and the 50 Centavos for $475.
