165-Year Old Shipwreck Half Dollars - Amazing History and Value!
Featured this week is a group of surprisingly well-preserved Liberty Seated Half Dollars ranging from 1854 to 1861 that were salvaged from the steamship SS Republic of 1865. Travelling from New York to New Orleans, the cargo was meant to fund post-Civil War reconstruction in the South, but never made the final destination as it met a fierce hurricane 100 miles off the coast of Georgia. There the treasure remained undisturbed at 1,640 feet in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean until its discovery in 2003.
Because they were tightly packed and bound in wooden barrels, their details and surfaces did not come into direct contact with the corrosive saltwater. Each coin for this offer was hand-selected for eye-appeal and certified by NGC with a special "Shipwreck Effect" designation, offering the perfect combination of beauty, history, value and a certified shipwreck treasure.
Our latest group acquired features some of the best-preserved examples and pricing we've ever offered:
