S.S. Republic | Seated Liberty | Various Date Half Dollars
This group of Shipwreck Effect coins, dated between 1854 and 1860, offers collectors an affordable entry point into historic U.S. coinage. Unlike many shipwreck coins priced beyond the reach of newer collectors, these pieces provide a tangible connection to American maritime and numismatic history.
The SS Republic went down in 1865 off the Georgia coast while transporting a significant shipment of silver and gold coins. During recovery operations in the early 2000s, divers discovered a large cache of U.S. silver coins. Because many of the coins were tightly stacked, they avoided the usual corrosion caused by prolonged saltwater exposure. This is the first time silver coins were salvaged with minimal erosion from saltwater exposure.
Most of the salvaged coins available in this group are Seated Liberty Half-Dollars and struck in either Philadelphia or New Orleans between 1854 and 1860. Their condition is exceptional given their time underwater and each has been certified by NGC with the official "shipwreck effect" designation. While surfaces may show slight variation depending on saltwater exposure, all coins retain strong visible detail and are well-struck.
These coins are certified artifacts of a storied shipwreck, making them a compelling addition to any collection or a memorable gift. The coin you receive will match the quality shown, although the date may vary within the series. Each coin has been certified by NGC and pedigreed to the SS Republic Shipwreck, as well.
