Each year the US Mint issues Gold American Eagles in two distinct versions, bullion and proof. Bullion coins primarily trade upon their intrinsic content, however, proof coins are typically valued over and well above their melt value. Proof versions of the Gold Eagle typically have much lower mintage figures, come in special mint packaging, and have a gorgeous, mirrored appearance that you can clearly distinguish from their bullion counterparts.
