Dutch merchants carried the lion daalder across the Atlantic, where colonists in New Amsterdam spent it as the lion dollar. This 1630 West Friesland issue came through that rough commercial life with almost no wear, which is unusual for a coin built to travel. The Dutch Republic struck these pieces in enormous numbers for trade with the Levant and the New World, so most survivors are worn flat or damaged. A sharp, problem-free example from the Dutch Golden Age is a genuinely difficult coin to locate.

The obverse shows an armored knight standing beside a shield charged with a rampant lion, his head turned over his shoulder in the classic pose of the type. Around him runs the legend MO ARG PRO CONFOE BELG, naming the silver coinage of the confederated provinces, and the letters remain bold around most of the rim. The reverse carries a large rampant lion with raised claws and a deeply cut mane, framed by CONFIDENS DNO NON MOVETUR, meaning he who trusts in the Lord is not moved. The date reads clearly at the top, and both central devices show strong relief with good definition in the lion's body and tail.

NGC graded this coin AU-58, with only slight friction on the knight's shoulder and the lion's upper back. The surfaces are light gray with soft luster in the protected areas, and the planchet is free of the clips and edge splits that trouble so many hammered daalders. At this grade the design elements stay crisp enough to study, which separates the coin from the heavily circulated pieces that make up most of the surviving population. A welcome addition to any collection of Dutch Republic silver or early colonial trade coinage.
