Mexico's Culiacan Mint struck gold 8 Escudos in modest numbers, and this 1869 CE piece came through more than 150 years without serious injury. The 8 Escudo was the largest gold denomination of the Mexican Republic, carrying nearly an ounce of gold in a single coin. Most were shipped abroad and melted for bullion, so survivors from the small western mints are far harder to locate than the Mexico City issues. Culiacan served the mining districts of Sinaloa, and its gold output in this period was small by any measure.

The obverse carries the cap and rays design that defined republican Mexico, with a hand reaching toward an open book marked LEY beneath a radiant liberty cap, encircled by LA LIBERTAD EN LA LEY. Around the lower rim sit the denomination 8 E, the C mintmark for Culiacan, the 1869 date, the CE assayer initials, and the 21 Qs fineness notation, all legible. The reverse shows the Mexican eagle perched on a cactus with a serpent in its beak, framed by oak and laurel branches and the legend REPUBLICA MEXICANA. Strike definition remains strong across the eagle's wings and the wreath detail.

NGC graded this 8 Escudo XF-45, with even light wear confined to the high points of the cap, the hand, and the eagle's breast. Warm original gold color covers both sides, and the fields are free of the heavy marks and edge problems that trouble so many large gold coins of this era. An XF-45 holder places this piece well above the typical circulated survivor of a Culiacan issue, and the honest surfaces make it easy on the eye. A welcome addition to any collection of Mexican Republic gold or Latin American mint types.
