This 1788-M 2 Escudos was struck at the Madrid mint during the final year of Charles III's reign, one of the most accomplished Spanish monarchs of the 18th century. Known as "el rey alcalde" (the mayor king) for his extensive public works and enlightened reforms, Charles III modernized Spain's economy, infrastructure, and military during a period when the Spanish Empire still commanded vast territories across the Americas and the Pacific. This coin carries the special pedigree designation "USA Legal Tender Until 1857," reflecting its historical role in American commerce during the early republic when foreign gold circulated freely alongside domestic coinage. Certified NGC AU-58, this piece represents an exceptionally well-preserved example from the closing year of Charles III's transformative rule.
The obverse features a finely detailed bust of Charles III facing right, rendered with the dignified realism characteristic of Spanish royal portraiture. The legend CAROLUS·III·D·G·HISP·ET IND·R surrounds the portrait, proclaiming his authority as King of Spain and the Indies. The reverse displays the crowned Spanish coat of arms with its quartered castles and lions, flanked by the Pillars of Hercules bearing the PLVS VLTRA motto. The motto INITIUM SAPIENTIAE TIMOR DOMINI frames the heraldic device. Both sides exhibit well-struck details with clear legends and boldly defined relief across the portrait and armorial elements.
Graded AU-58 by NGC, this coin retains sharp definition throughout the design with only light wear visible on the highest points of the king's features and crown. The surfaces display warm, original gold color with attractive even patina and minimal marks from brief circulation. Spanish gold from Charles III's reign remains highly collectible for its historical significance, artistic merit, and connection to both European and American numismatic traditions. With 151 examples graded by NGC and only 21 at this level with just 19 finer, this piece represents a premium opportunity to acquire a well-preserved example from the enlightened monarch's final year.
