Most 1798 Heraldic Eagle dollars show seven arrows in the eagle's talons, but this one shows ten. That scarce reverse die is a variety collectors hunt by sight, and it separates this dollar from the far more common seven-arrow pairings. The Philadelphia Mint struck these large silver dollars in the earliest years of federal coinage, when dies were cut by hand and no two pairings matched exactly. Heavy use in commerce wore most survivors down to low grades, so an original coin with this much remaining detail is not easy to locate.

Robert Scot's Draped Bust portrait follows a Gilbert Stuart drawing, and Liberty faces right with flowing curls and a ribbon tied at the back of her hair. Drapery covers her shoulder, LIBERTY arches above, and thirteen stars flank the bust with the date 1798 below. The Heraldic Eagle reverse carries a shield across the eagle's breast, an olive branch in one talon and the ten arrows in the other. A banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM crosses above the shield, with clouds and stars over the eagle and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the rim.

PCGS graded this dollar XF-40, and the surfaces wear an even gray patina with warmer highlights across the devices. Liberty's hair strands remain clearly separated, the drapery lines hold, and the shield stripes and wing feathers stay well defined on the reverse. All legends read boldly, and the coin shows the honest circulation wear expected of an eighteenth century silver dollar without distracting marks. Problem-free Extremely Fine survivors sit in a grade range that balances strong detail against the cost of Mint State early dollars, which makes this an appealing example for a type or variety set. The coin pictured is the exact coin you will receive.
