1956 Franklin Half Dollar PCGS MS-66+ FBL
Full Bell Lines turn an ordinary Franklin Half Dollar into a coin collectors actively hunt, and this 1956 half carries that designation with a plus grade on top. Philadelphia struck just over four million business-strike halves that year, the lowest figure of any Franklin date from the 1950s. Most of those coins went straight into circulation or into rolls where bag marks flattened the lower bell lines. Survivors that combine a premium Mint State grade with complete bell lines make up a small fraction of the date.
John R. Sinnock's obverse shows Benjamin Franklin in profile, with LIBERTY arched above and IN GOD WE TRUST along the lower rim. The portrait is well struck, and the hair, collar, and facial detail stand in sharp relief against open fields. On the reverse, the Liberty Bell dominates the design with the small eagle at right, while E PLURIBUS UNUM sits to the left and HALF DOLLAR curves along the bottom. The bell's crack and the horizontal lines across its base show clean separation, which is exactly what the Full Bell Lines designation requires.
PCGS graded this half MS-66+ FBL, a step above the standard MS-66 assessment. Deep russet, amber, and olive toning covers both sides, with lighter silver highlights across Franklin's portrait and the face of the bell. The surfaces are free of distracting marks, and the underlying luster still moves beneath the patina. Condition at this level, paired with original color and complete bell lines, puts the coin near the top of what the date offers. A welcome addition to any collection of toned Franklin Half Dollars.
