1798 Draped Bust Silver Dollar Large Eagle PCGS VF-25
The Heraldic Eagle reverse gave America's largest silver coin a bold new look, and 1798 was the first year it appeared on the dollar. This Draped Bust Dollar was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the only mint operating at the time. It circulated during John Adams' presidency, when the young republic was still building trust in its own coinage. Early dollars like this one are cornerstone pieces in any 18th century US collection.
The obverse carries Robert Scot's Draped Bust portrait of Liberty, with flowing hair tied by a ribbon and a drapery at the bodice. Thirteen stars surround the portrait, with LIBERTY above and the 1798 date below, all clearly legible. The reverse shows the heraldic eagle with a shield on its breast, holding arrows and an olive branch. The E PLURIBUS UNUM banner, the cloud and star arrangement, and the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA legend all remain readable with honest, even wear.
PCGS has graded this dollar VF-25, a solid circulated grade for the type. The surfaces show smooth, natural silver-gray patina with darker tone in the protected areas. Major devices are outlined boldly, and the coin is free of major distractions. Genuine 1798 Large Eagle dollars are always in demand, since they represent the first year of the design and one of the earliest US silver dollars available to collectors. For those seeking an original, problem-free example of an early American dollar, this coin delivers. The coin pictured is the exact coin you will receive.
