This 1798-M 2 Escudos was struck at the Madrid mint during the reign of Charles IV, a monarch whose rule witnessed Spain's struggle to maintain its colonial empire amid revolutionary upheaval in Europe and the Americas. Issued just nine years after the French Revolution, this coin represents Spanish gold specie from a period when the monarchy faced increasing fiscal strain and international conflict. The piece has been certified NGC AU-58, showing remarkable preservation for a coin that circulated over two centuries ago during one of European history's most turbulent eras.

The obverse displays a well-executed bust of Charles IV facing right, his profile rendered in the formal style characteristic of late 18th-century Spanish coinage. The legend CAROL·IIII·D·G·HISP·ET IND·R encircles the portrait, proclaiming his authority as King of Spain and the Indies. The reverse features the crowned Spanish coat of arms with its distinctive quartered castles and lions, flanked by the Pillars of Hercules bearing the PLVS VLTRA motto. The legend INITIUM SAPIENTIAE TIMOR DOMINI (The Fear of the Lord is the Beginning of Wisdom) frames the design. Both sides exhibit crisp strikes with fully legible legends and well-defined heraldic details.

Graded AU-58 by NGC, this coin retains sharp definition throughout the portrait and coat of arms, with only minimal wear on the highest relief points. The surfaces show warm, original gold color with attractive patina and light handling marks consistent with brief circulation. Spanish gold from Charles IV's reign remains actively collected for European type sets, colonial history collections, and as representative examples of pre-Napoleonic monetary systems. With 49 examples graded by NGC and only 12 at this level with just 3 finer, this piece represents a scarce opportunity in premium About Uncirculated condition. The coin pictured is the exact coin you will receive.
