This 1825-M 2 Escudos was struck at the Madrid mint under Ferdinand VII during a period of intense political transformation following Spain's Napoleonic occupation and the collapse of its colonial empire. Issued during the turbulent 1820s, this gold coin represents Spain's attempt to stabilize its monetary system while navigating constitutional crises and the loss of American territories. The Madrid mint mark "M" and assayer mark "AJ" identify this piece as part of the standard gold coinage that circulated throughout the Iberian Peninsula during Ferdinand's absolutist restoration.
The obverse displays a mature laureate portrait of Ferdinand VII facing right, his features rendered in sharp relief with careful attention to the hair detail and classical laurel crown. The legend FERDIN·VII·D·G·HISP·REX encircles the portrait, clearly legible with well-defined lettering that shows minimal wear. The reverse features the Spanish coat of arms crowned and flanked by the Pillars of Hercules, with the denomination "2S" (2 Escudos) prominently displayed. The heraldic shield shows strong detail in the quarterings representing Castile, León, Aragon, and the Two Sicilies, with the Bourbon dynasty's fleur-de-lis at center. The surrounding inscription reads IN UTROQUE FELIX AUSPICE DEO, and the date 1825 appears below the shield.
Graded NGC AU58, this piece exhibits excellent eye appeal with light wear confined to the portrait's highest points and the crown on the reverse shield. The surfaces retain much of their original luster beneath attractive golden-honey patina, and both sides show even wear consistent with brief circulation. With an NGC census of only 15 coins graded across all levels—and just 5 examples at AU58 with only 2 finer—this Madrid mint 2 Escudos represents a significant condition rarity for Spanish gold of this era. Its combination of historical significance, attractive surfaces, and scarcity at this grade level makes it particularly appealing to collectors of European gold or Ferdinand VII coinage.
