The 1923-D double eagle packs nearly a full ounce of pre-1933 Denver gold into what many collectors still call the finest design ever placed on an American circulating coin. Struck at the Denver Mint as part of the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series produced from 1907 through 1933, it carries a $20 face value as United States legal tender. The coin weighs 33.436 grams of .900 fine gold, measures 34 mm across, and carries a lettered edge reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The obverse presents Augustus Saint-Gaudens' full-length Liberty striding forward from a radiant sunburst, torch held high in her right hand and an olive branch extended in her left, with the Capitol dome at lower left and 48 stars ringing the border beneath LIBERTY. The date 1923 appears at right with the small D mintmark of the Denver Mint alongside it. The reverse shows a young eagle in flight above a rising sun, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS arced along the upper rim and IN GOD WE TRUST below the sun's rays.

Saint-Gaudens double eagles remain the most admired large gold coin the United States ever issued, and Denver's 1923 production of 1,702,250 pieces is a branch-mint issue that turns up far less often in Gem condition than the Philadelphia coins of the same date. Most double eagles of the era went into bank vaults and were melted after 1933, so surviving Mint State pieces are the exception rather than the rule. At MS-66 the surfaces show the warm orange-gold color and unbroken cartwheel luster that collectors of this series look for first.
