1929 Standing Liberty Quarter NGC MS-66+ FH
Full Head Standing Liberty Quarters are difficult to find at any date, and this 1929 earned both the FH designation and a plus grade from NGC. Hermon MacNeil's design placed Liberty's helmeted head at the high point of the die, so the three leaves and hairline of her headpiece were among the first details to fade on a worn die. Philadelphia struck just over 11 million quarters in 1929, yet only a fraction came off the presses with a fully detailed head. Finding one that also survived the decades without the bagmarks that plague the series narrows the field considerably. The combined population of finer coins between NGC and PCGS is less than 620!
The obverse shows Liberty standing in a gateway with a shield raised on her left arm and an olive branch extended in her right hand, while IN GOD WE TRUST runs across the wall at her sides. The stars along the lower border are sharp and the 1929 date at the base stands bold and complete. On the reverse an eagle flies to the right across an open field, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM above and QUARTER DOLLAR below. Wing feathers and breast detail show strong device definition, and the stars flanking the eagle are fully formed.
NGC graded this quarter MS-66+ FH, placing it near the top of the certified population for the date. Luster rolls cleanly across both sides beneath attractive golden toning that gathers at the rims and gives the silver a warm cast. The fields are free of the scattered abrasions common to the series, and the strike carries full definition through Liberty's head and shield. Quality of this order, combined with the Full Head designation and the plus modifier, makes this a genuinely difficult coin to upgrade. For those seeking a high-grade, well-struck example of the Standing Liberty type, this coin delivers.
