Why physical metals, and not stocks or “paper” metals?
A precious metals IRA has the same tax advantages as any other IRA. The difference is what you actually own.
| Physical metals IRA | Stock or fund IRA | “Paper” metals (ETFs, futures, mining stocks) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you own | Specific coins and bars, securely stored for your IRA at an approved depository | Shares of companies or funds | Shares or contracts that track the metal price. You don’t own specific metal. |
| Depends on a company or issuer | No. Physical metal lets you take your wealth out of the financial system. | Yes. Value depends on how the companies perform. | Yes. Value depends on the fund, its issuer, and the balance sheets of the institutions behind it. |
| Moves with the stock market | Gold and silver have often moved independently of stocks, which is why investors use them to diversify. | Yes | Mining stocks often do. Metal funds track the metal price. |
| Can you physically hold the metal? | No. Metals are segregated and stored at approved depositories (vaults). | No | Generally no |
| Tax advantages | The same IRA rules apply to all three: tax-deferred in a traditional IRA, tax-free qualified withdrawals in a Roth IRA. There is no penalty to roll your existing account into an account that allows you to hold physical precious metals. | ||

Don’t overpay for the metals in your IRA
The metals you buy are most of what your IRA costs you, and some IRA companies build large markups into them. We price IRA metals at our everyday low bullion prices. They’re posted on every product page and move with the live metals market, so you can compare gold and silver prices before you buy. More of your retirement money goes into metal, not markup.
How it works
- Talk to an IRA specialist. Fill out our short IRA form or call 1-800-928-6468. We’ll go over how to get the process started and the mixture of metals that is right for you.
- Open your IRA. Our preferred custodians are Advanta IRA, New Direction Trust Company, Strata Trust Company and GoldStar Trust Company. We can work with any IRA custodian that allows precious metals, including one you already use. We’ll send you the link to start the process after we speak.
- Fund your account. Once you've chosen your custodian, transfer or roll over money from an existing IRA, 401(k) or other retirement account. Most accounts are ready to go in under a week, and we use that time to put together the best mixture of metals for you.
- Choose your depository. Once the account is set up, we complete your purchase and ship your metals to a secure, IRA-approved depository. You can view your holdings anytime on your custodian’s website, and manage your holdings with us every step of the way.
What to have ready
- A photo ID
- A recent statement from the IRA, 401(k), TSP or other account you’re moving money from
- Whether you’re transferring, rolling over, or making a new contribution (we’ll help if you’re not sure)
- Your beneficiary’s name and date of birth
Fees, custodian details and the full step-by-step guide are on our IRA FAQ & fees page. To see which coins and bars qualify, see IRA-eligible metals.
