2026 1-oz American Gold Eagle

American Gold Eagles set the standard for gold ownership around the world. Each 2026 coin holds one full troy ounce of gold, struck by the U.S. Mint, and carries a $50 face value backed by the federal government, which makes these legal tender and not simply an ounce of metal. The alloy is 22 karat, .9167 fine, with small additions of silver and copper that leave the coins hard enough to shrug off the nicks and rub that mark softer pure gold. They come Brilliant Uncirculated. Larger orders ship in sealed U.S. Mint rolls of 20, and smaller quantities are packaged in individual protective flips.

The obverse carries Augustus Saint-Gaudens' Liberty, and the design has outlasted every other American gold motif because it shows movement rather than a portrait: Liberty strides out of a burst of sunrays with a torch held high in her right hand and an olive branch reaching out in her left, her gown drawn back by the wind, the dome of the Capitol small at her feet on the lower left, LIBERTY arcing overhead, thirteen stars around the rim and the 2026 date at her right. The relief stands high enough that the folds of the gown catch under a thumb, and the frosted devices sit against fields bright enough to throw light as the coin turns. The reverse, by Jennie Norris, is a tight portrait of a bald eagle's head worked feather by feather down to the ring of the eye, a study of the bird itself rather than a piece of heraldry, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcing above, E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST beneath it, and 50 DOLLARS and 1 OZ. FINE GOLD along the lower rim. The edge is reeded.

The program has run without a break since 1986, and that unbroken record is a large part of why these move so freely on the secondary market. Purity, weight and design are known quantities to every coin shop, refiner and bullion desk in the country, so resale rarely requires explanation or assay. Premiums stay modest for a sovereign gold coin, the 32.7 mm diameter stacks neatly in tubes and rolls, and buyers building a position over time can add ounces in a form that is recognized on sight anywhere they eventually choose to sell.
