1783 Mexico City, Mexico 8 Reale NGC MS-62

NGC has certified only 63 examples of the 1783 Mexico City 8 Reale, and just two of them carry this MS-62 grade with none finer. The Spanish colonial 8 Reale was the workhorse of world trade, and nearly every survivor shows the hard life of a circulating coin. Mint State pieces from this date are a different story, since they escaped the counting houses and merchant scales that wore down the rest. This one comes from the Mexico City mint with FF assayer initials under Charles III.

The obverse carries the laureate, draped bust of Charles III facing right, framed by the legend CAROLUS III DEI GRATIA with the date 1783 below. The portrait shows bold detail in the hair ribbon and drapery, and the king's profile stands in sharp relief against even fields. On the reverse, the crowned Spanish arms sit between the Pillars of Hercules, each wrapped in the PLVS VLTRA banner that once promised lands beyond the known world. The castles and lions of Castile and Leon remain well defined, while the Mo mintmark, 8 R denomination, and FF assayer initials read clearly.

NGC graded this 8 Reale MS-62, a grade that confirms the coin never circulated. Its surfaces keep original mint luster beneath light gray and russet toning, with only the scattered contact marks expected at this level. Sitting tied for finest certified, this piece offers the strike quality and eye appeal that Mint State colonial silver rarely delivers. A welcome addition to any collection of Spanish colonial or Mexican silver.
