1849 Madrid, Spain 20 Reale de Vellon NGC XF-40
The Grundy Collection pedigree on the NGC holder sets this 1849 Madrid 20 Reale de Vellon apart from the ordinary survivors of Isabel II's silver coinage. Madrid struck only 120,000 of these 20 reales de vellon, the largest silver denomination of the young queen's reign. The initials of assayers CL sit below the shield, and coins of this size did real work in Spanish commerce. Most were worn smooth or melted as the monetary system changed, so a survivor with a named collection pedigree is a genuinely uncommon combination.
The obverse carries the youthful bust of Isabel II facing right, her hair gathered in a braid and secured with a floral ornament, with the legend ISABEL 2A POR LA GRACIA DE DIOS Y LA CONSTITUCION running around the rim and the date 1849 below. The portrait shows strong device definition through the cheek and jaw, while the lettering stands bold and complete. On the reverse the crowned arms of Spain display the castles of Castile and the lions of Leon, with the Bourbon fleurs-de-lis in the central oval. Sprays of flowers flank the shield, the value appears as 20 and Rs at the sides, and the legend REYNA DE LAS ESPANAS completes the design.
NGC graded this piece XF-40, a level that keeps the crown detail, the shield charges, and the fine hair work clearly readable. NGC has certified just six examples of the issue across all grades. Its surfaces carry even gray patina with warm russet tones gathering near the rims, and the wear sits smoothly across the high points without distracting marks. That combination of honest wear and attractive patina gives the coin real eye appeal for a circulated crown of this era. A welcome addition to any collection of Spanish crown-sized silver or Isabel II coinage. The coin pictured is the exact coin you will receive.
