This 1857-S $20 Liberty Gold piece rode the SS Central America to the bottom of the Atlantic, lost in a September 1857 hurricane along with tons of freshly minted California gold. The sinking helped trigger the Panic of 1857, and the cargo stayed on the seabed until a deep-ocean recovery brought it back in the late 1980s. San Francisco gold from that hoard reached collectors with original surfaces that circulating survivors simply do not have. PCGS also attributes this one as the 20A Spiked Shield die variety, a recognized marriage that specialists in the series actively track.

James B. Longacre's Liberty faces left in a beaded coronet lettered LIBERTY, ringed by thirteen stars with the date below. The portrait shows sharp relief in the hair curls and strong device definition along the coronet and truncation. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle spreads its wings behind an ornate shield, with a rayed field of stars above and TWENTY D. and the S mintmark below. As a Type 1 Double Eagle, the reverse carries no motto, and the small die spike at the shield gives the variety its name.

PCGS graded this Double Eagle MS-64, placing it at the upper end of what survives for the issue. The surfaces keep a satiny luster with the warm orange-gold color that marks the best of the SS Central America gold, and the fields are clean for the assigned grade. Eye appeal of this caliber is the real draw here, since ocean recovery preserved the mint bloom that land-held examples lost long ago. A welcome addition to any collection of Type 1 Liberty Double Eagles or California Gold Rush numismatics.
