1878-CC Morgan Silver Dollar NGC MS-64
Carson City struck its very first Morgan Dollars in 1878, and this is that debut issue from the Nevada mint collectors chase hardest. Just 2,212,000 pieces left the CC dies that year, a small figure beside the millions pouring out of Philadelphia and San Francisco. Later silver melts under the Pittman Act thinned the survivors further, so high-grade CC Morgans never kept pace with collector demand. A first-year Carson City dollar anchors any Morgan set, and this one wears the MS-64 grade.
George T. Morgan's Liberty head faces left in a Phrygian cap, her coronet lettered LIBERTY while wheat and cotton leaves tuck into her hair as a nod to the farming states. Thirteen stars ring the lower border beneath E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the 1878 date sits firmly at the base. The reverse shows an eagle with wings spread wide, clutching arrows and an olive branch above a laurel wreath, with IN GOD WE TRUST arched overhead. Strong device definition carries through the breast feathers and wreath, and the twin CC mintmark stands clear below the bow.
NGC graded this Morgan Dollar MS-64, and the surfaces back that call with bright, frosty luster across both sides. Light russet toning gathers along the rims and frames the fields without clouding them, while the cheek and eagle's breast show only the scattered marks expected at the grade. For an issue that circulated hard in the Nevada silver country, a choice uncirculated survivor with this much eye appeal sits near the top of what most collectors ever handle. A welcome addition to any collection of Carson City silver dollars.
