1879-CC Morgan Silver Dollar PCGS VF-35
The 1879-CC Morgan Dollar is the date Carson City collectors chase hardest after the 1889-CC, and only 756,000 ever left the Nevada mint. Many of those coins stayed in bags for decades and later met the melting pot, so circulated survivors are far scarcer than the mintage alone suggests. This piece carries the CC mintmark that defines the most storied branch mint in American coinage. Completing a Morgan set without it is simply not possible.
George T. Morgan's Liberty head fills the obverse, her hair tied with a cotton and wheat wreath that speaks to the agricultural South and West. E PLURIBUS UNUM arches above, with thirteen stars and the 1879 date framing the portrait below. The reverse shows an eagle with wings spread wide, clutching an olive branch and arrows above a laurel wreath. Strong device definition remains in the wings, wreath leaves, and the bold CC mintmark beneath the ribbon bow.
PCGS graded this Morgan Dollar VF-35, a solid mid-circulated grade that keeps honest detail where it counts. Even gray and light russet toning covers both sides, and the surfaces are free of distracting marks for a coin that saw real commerce. The high points on the hair and eagle's breast show smooth, natural wear rather than harsh handling, and the eye appeal is pleasing for the grade. A welcome addition to any collection of Carson City silver dollars.
