1928 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold NGC MS-66+ CAC
The 1928 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle was the last date of the series to reach everyday commerce before the 1933 gold recall. Millions of survivors went to the melting pot in the years that followed, and most coins that escaped did so inside foreign bank vaults. That history left 1928 as the date collectors encounter most often, so attention shifted to the finest survivors rather than the date itself.
Augustus Saint-Gaudens placed Liberty striding forward from a sunburst, a torch raised in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, with the Capitol dome small at her feet. Forty-eight stars ring the border, one for each state in the Union in 1928. The reverse shows a young eagle in flight above the sun's rays, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS arched above and IN GOD WE TRUST along the lower border. The strike is bold across the high points, and the devices show the sharp relief this design is known for.
NGC graded this Double Eagle MS-66+, and CAC reviewed the coin and approved it with a green sticker. Luster rolls across both sides in a warm orange-gold tone, and the surfaces are notably clean of the bagmarks that hold most survivors at MS-63 or MS-64. Reaching the plus level at the gem grade is uncommon for any Saint-Gaudens issue, and the CAC approval confirms quality at the high end of the assigned grade. The eye appeal is strong from rim to rim, with no distracting marks in the open fields. For those seeking a high-grade example of America's final circulating gold coinage, this coin delivers.
