The American Gold Eagle moves more freely than any other gold coin on earth, and that liquidity is exactly why stackers keep coming back to it. Each coin holds one full troy ounce of gold, struck by the U.S. Mint and carrying a fifty dollar face value that makes them legal tender rather than simply an ounce of metal. The 22-karat alloy adds small amounts of copper and silver, which makes these hard enough to survive handling and shipping that would leave marks on a softer coin. Dates vary with inventory, and back-dated coins carry the identical gold content. They ship individually, in U.S. Mint tubes of 20, or in sealed Mint boxes of 500.

The obverse carries the Augustus Saint-Gaudens figure of Liberty striding out of a burst of sunrays, her torch held high in one hand and an olive branch extended in the other, hair and drapery swept back by the motion. It was drawn for the double eagle of 1907 and has never been improved upon, which is why the Mint still uses it. The reverse shows a close portrait of a bald eagle, the feathering cut deeply enough that the head stands proud of the field and catches light along every barb, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST above, and 50 DOLLARS and 1 OZ. FINE GOLD below. The edge is reeded, and the frosted devices against bright fields give each coin real depth in the hand.

Very few series have run without interruption since 1986, and that unbroken record is a large part of why these trade so easily. Every coin shop, refiner and online dealer in the country knows them on sight, the weight and purity are guaranteed by the U.S. government, and the resale market is deep enough that selling is rarely more complicated than making a phone call. If you are building a core gold position, American Gold Eagles are the standard starting point, with fractional sizes and bars added around them.
