Recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Central America, this 1854-O Seated Liberty Dime with Arrows carries a provenance that no mint-fresh example can match. The ship sank in a hurricane off the Carolina coast in September 1857, taking its cargo of California gold and a trove of coins to the ocean floor, where they remained for over 130 years. This New Orleans-struck dime entered that hold fresh from its journey through Gold Rush-era commerce, and its survival is itself a piece of American history.

The obverse presents a well-executed seated Liberty figure surrounded by thirteen stars, with small arrows flanking the date 1854 - the signature feature of the one-year Arrows type introduced to reflect a slight reduction in silver content. The portrait retains bold detail in the drapery and shield device despite its grade. The reverse displays the "ONE DIME" denomination enclosed within an open laurel wreath with the legend "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" surrounding it, and the New Orleans "O" mintmark is clearly visible below the bow. Overall definition is sharp for the assigned grade.

PCGS has certified this coin XF-40, a grade that reflects even, honest wear with the main design elements retaining pleasing definition and attractive original surfaces. The coin is housed in a special PCGS "Ship of Gold" presentation holder alongside a capsule of California gold dust also recovered from the S.S. Central America, accompanied by a Bob Evans (Chief Scientist of the recovery project) signed certification label. Arrows dimes from the New Orleans Mint in XF grades are collectible on their own merits; this shipwreck-certified example with original gold dust elevates its appeal to shipwreck and type collectors alike. For those seeking a tangible connection to one of American history's most storied maritime tragedies, this coin and its companion gold dust are a singular offering.
